Understanding the on-the-ground needs of our clients’ clinical teams is a key success factor. It enables us to determine the best approach for implementing our clinical solutions, while ensuring user-friendliness, which facilitates clinicians’ operation of our platform. HOSPITALIS is shaping the future’s health sector through the development and implementation of a digital platform for coordinating health care and services. The platform aims to create a positive experience for citizens and clinicians by implementing clinical trajectories, for effective health services planning. “Our platform helps institutions with health care promotion, prevention, and clinical intervention while directing the pertinent information to the right person, in the right place, at the right time,” explains David.

It all began in 2007 with the acquisition of the intellectual property for the ACE-Multi (SIC-CC) and ACE-PTM (MSI) solutions from the Centre de réadaptation de l’Estrie (CRE), Sacré-Cœur Hospital in Montreal and the CHUQ. During the delivery of their first projects, HOSPITALIS encountered much difficulty in meeting the needs of different clinical situations. They quickly realized the need to offer clinical solutions that adapt to various contexts, needs and clinical requirements.

Accordingly, the company decided to invest in the redesign of products in terms of user-friendliness and adaptability of parameters. This led to the creation of the ACE platform, which is composed of three main modules: a coordination module in the form of clinical trajectories, a clinical documentation and record keeping module and a module for the management and dissemination of practice guides. At present, the various modules of the ACE platform are internationalized and available in four languages: French, English, Spanish and Portuguese.

HOSPITALIS has just completed the “3rd generation” of its platform, which is fully Web and mobile compatible. “Our platform can be deployed onsite, and our new version also includes a cloud option,” specifies David.

Challenges that push us forward

While HOSPITALIS is expanding in Quebec and abroad, its journey has not always been easy. They have, however, put their adversity to good use: towards the evolution of their technology. “In our first deployment attempt, we presented content that already existed in a way that was not adapted to the challenges of other clinical contexts,” David recalls. “We hit a wall, quite drastically. We reacted quickly though, opting for a module that allowed us to configure all content according to clinical needs. Our clients trusted us and today we offer a value-added solution that provides them with a high level of adaptability and autonomy that is greatly appreciated.”

Great tenacity has enabled HOSPITALIS to succeed in the difficult field of health, and their success touches various niches. First, they targeted the public network market. Then, in 2015, they decided to diversify their clientele by targeting the elderly market in a more precise way, with an integrated clinical approach based on health promotion, prevention and the coordination of care and services with the goal of maintaining patient autonomy. In this way, HOSPITALIS also targets the private sector, more specifically that of residences for autonomous or semi-autonomous seniors, as well as CHSLDs and home care services.

Innovative and intelligent

The diversification of their clientele has contributed significantly to the growth of HOSPITALIS, who also attribute their development to the choice of placing innovation among their top priorities throughout their commercial history.

Mobility and digital technologies of the future are at the heart of their growth strategy and HOSPITALIS is currently exploring partnership opportunities to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities into their platform for guidance recommendations, dynamic coordination and clinical decision support according to the patient’s health status.

David Bertrand believes that innovation, adaptability and user-friendliness are important factors in the adoption rate of the HOSPITALIS platform. “While normally these types of solutions often require weeks of training, ours requires only three hours. And it has an adoption rate of 94.2%,” he indicates. “This success became clear to me the day clinicians, themselves, started asking to use our platform!”

In the end, we decided to let go of the idea of designing products, because our service offering was really solid.
