START-UPS TO PRODUCE BETTER SOFTWARE AT LOWER COST
OUR GUESTS SPEAKERS
Claude Y. Laporte
Professor, Eng., Ph.D.
École de Technologie Supérieure
Department of Software and IT Engineering
Claude Y. Laporte, is a professor of software engineering at the École de technologie supérieure (ETS), an engineering school of over 7,600 students. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Royal Military College Saint-Jean and earned a master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal and a doctorate from the University of Western Brittany. In 2013, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the Universidad de San Martin de Porres of Peru awarded him an honorary doctorate.
Houcine Jeljeli
Senior Consultant
Dynamics AX Specialist
Metam Solutions
Houcine Jeljeli is a senior consultant, specializing in software development and implementation and in process improvement. A double Bachelor in Physics, and Computer Science from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Mr. Jeljeli is the head of Metam Solutions, a consulting and software development company with seven employees, operating in Canada and Tunisia. Currently completing the final work of his master’s degree in software engineering at the École de technologie supérieure, Mr. Jeljeli works with Professor Claude Laporte to study the best approaches for the implementation of the ISO/IEC 29110 standard in different organizations.
Luc Filion
Chief Executive Officer
Nuum Solutions inc.
Luc Filion is an engineer with 15 years experience in software engineering and systems engineering. He has worked as a project engineer to re-engineer the management of engineering processes. Luc Filion founded two companies: first, Codesign Space, in 2005, whose products accelerate the design of hardware/software systems. He set up and supervised the team and the software development process, and participated in product development. Second, in 2009, he co-founded Nuum Solutions, which specializes in software for engineering services and working methods for embedded software. It performs analysis of software and system processes. He recently worked on the development of a product for implementation of the ISO/IEC 29110 standard (software lifecycle management for SMEs). He is also interested in Agile processes in embedded applications.
Luc loves to share his experience and ideas on people-centric organization of work and on technical and economic analysis as related to the delivery of system and software engineering projects.
OBJECTIVES
Developing software presents major challenges in terms of effort, budget and schedule. Start-ups often lack time and human resources. Aware of this problem, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed a series of standards and guidelines, ISO/IEC 29110, to help very small businesses be more efficient and produce better quality software at lower cost.
These guides are available free of charge. Four levels, or profiles, have been established: the first level, called the entry profile, for start-ups and development projects of 6 person-months or less. The second level, called the basic profile, applicable when developing one project at a time. The third level, called the intermediate profile, for the development of several projects simultaneously with more than one development team, and the last level, called the advanced profile, to improve business management.
ISO/IEC 29110 is characterized by its light-weight and its ease and low cost of implementation. The standard describes two processes, namely, the process of project management and the technical process, for developing software. The project management process is intended to help developers who have good technical expertise, but who often have weakness in project management. The technical process is designed to help developers to coordinate the development of software to deliver the features requested by customers while respecting budgets and schedules. It is now possible, after successfully satisfying the criteria of a third party audit, to obtain a certificate of conformity to ISO/IEC 29110. The first compliance certificates have been awarded to small businesses in Brazil and Peru.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn about this standard and to interact directly with the speakers.
