Improving project management for small projects
Seizing the benefits of standards

Developing software presents significant budgeting and scheduling challenges. Start-ups, moreover, often have very limited time and human resources for their projects. Aware of these problems, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) has developed ISO/IEC 29110, a series of standards and guidelines, available free of charge, and specifically focussed on helping even the smallest companies to reach the highest levels of efficiency in producing high quality software at the lowest costs. The guides are organised in four levels: level 1 for use of development teams of 6 people or less; level 2 for teams working on a single project at a time; level 3 for the management of multiple, parallel projects; and level 4 focussed on better business management.

ISO/IEC 29110 is outstanding for the ease and low-cost of its implementation. It consists of two processes – a project management process and a technical process for software development. The former targets experienced software developers who need to strengthen their project management skills; the latter targets the planning and coordination of software development to produce the results required by the customer while respecting budget and schedule criteria.

Implementation kits are available free of charge and offer specific and detailed information on the use of ISO/IEC 29110 (e.g., tasks, phases, roles, products, templates, audit lists). More importantly, ETS specialists are available, without charge, to coach qualifying companies in adopting and implementing the standard.

Improve your efficiency and your competitive position – take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about ISO/IEC 29110 from Claude Y. Laporte.
